She was thinking of strangling Setzer.
She was, grudgingly, grateful that he'd never happened to mention the stolen kiss to the others; the kiss itself hadn't seemed like any great sacrifice to her at the time, simply a rather damp and surprisingly non-intimate extension of the ruse, but when she pictured the others, primarily Locke, learning of it, it began to take on greater importance.
"I thought you were Maria, that's all," he was saying.
"And the two of you are lovers, that's quite all right, I understand perfectly," she interrupted, but he wasn't to be swayed from apologizing. In his own way.
"Yes, but I should have realized—"
"No, you shouldn't, that was the whole point! Why do you think I let you kiss me?"
"You weren't swept away by sudden, fiery passion for me?"
She snorted. "No."
"Then why did you agree to the marriage condition?"
"You're not that stupid, surely."
"Of course not. Just hopeful."
She turned back from the railing to look at him again. "Why the obsession with marriage?" she asked. "If you were in love with Maria I could see it, but if one blonde is as good as another... or were you bluffing?"
"A bit of both. I expected you'd refuse, but it's time I took a bride."
"An established gentlemen like yourself, yes, I can see that."
He surprised her by laughing - really laughing, his head thrown back - the first time she'd seen him do so. "You make a valid point," he finally admitted, still chuckling.
"Not valid enough to worm an answer out of you."
"Mm. No."
"Setzer, at this point I could cut your throat and pilot the airship myself."
"And sully your sacrifice?"
"What— the kiss? You're a very strange man," she said. "Honestly. An answer?"
"What answer?" he asked. "Marrying Maria was a dare. I didn't expect it to last. Trying to wed you was a gamble; if you agreed, well, I'd have a true wild card in my hands. And you impressed me." He turned to look at her, then. "You're more beautiful than Maria, a surprisingly fine singer for one so untrained, and either brave, foolish or crazy, all of which are interesting possibilities. After that elementary hustle you pulled, I'm leaning towards brave, but the odds on crazy are good, too."
"Flatterer," she said, but she couldn't help smiling as she turned back to look at the stars.
